Since 2010, the light-truck section (pickup trucks, vans and SUVs) has outsold the passenger-cars section (sedans, hatchbacks and sports cars) by a progressively widenbsp;margin.

Sales of light trucks in 2017 are up 8.2 percent year over year, exceeding 824,000 units sold compared with only 400,000 passenger cars sold in the samenbsp;interval.

According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, SUVs alone currently control a 40-per-cent share of the entire Canadian industry, up from just more than 15 percent innbsp;2002.

SUVs were initially constructed exclusively on truck-based platforms with higher ground clearance, all-wheel drive powertrains and bigger, more powerful engines that gave them the ability to traverse rugged terrain withnbsp;simplicity.

Today, a growing number of SUVs are based on lighter, more efficient car-based platforms. This has resulted in an explosion of choice for customers opting for the excess space and flexibility of annbsp;SUV.

These are the top-10 best-selling SUVs in Canada as of July, with units sold and year-over-yearnbsp;expansion:

  1. Toyota RAV4 – 29,583nbsp;-LRB- Two %)
